What is Naturopathic Medicine?

HOW MUCH TRAINING DOES A NATUROPATH RECEIVE?

After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree, naturopathic students complete 4 years of medical school including 720 hours of clinical rotations and two sets of board exams. Dr. Livengood also completed the highly competitive Integrative Residency through Bastyr University and Integrative Therapeutics. In addition, ND’s complete 30 hours of continuing education annually, as opposed to 20 hours for MD’s and 12 for chiropractors.

What type of coursework does a Naturopath study?

Four years of medical school includes a foundation of basic and clinical sciences followed by general medicine topics such as pathology and pharmacology. Specialty topics unique to naturopathic medicine include nutrition, herbal medicine, physical medicine, homeopathy, Chinese medicine, mind-body work, physiotherapy and laboratory biomarkers. Licensed Naturopaths are also required to have 720 hours of supervised, direct patient contact and pass two sets of board exams. Four years of study is year round, each quarter averaging 25 to 28 credits.

What is the difference between Homeopathic Medicine and Naturopathic Medicine?

Both Homeopathy and Naturopathy are systems of medicine which started in Europe about 200 years ago and have spread world-wide as effective and gentle healing modalities that treat almost every medical condition. The main difference between them is the type of medicines used: homeopathy uses solely homeopathic remedies, while naturopathy uses a variety of medicines, including homeopathy, but also botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, physical medicine, and lifestyle counseling.

Why do I need to schedule an appointment for a prescription refill?

A certain number of refills are safe and permissible without a doctor’s visit. Some prescriptions require labwork and/or consultations. Every time the doctor fills your prescription, she is making sure that the medication is necessary and safe for you; checking for interactions with other meds and supplements; and assessing you for adverse effects.
